The Wellington-Napoleon Fire Protection District Jr. Firefighter program has been running since 1991 and has been the most successful recruitment program the department has ever seen. An untold number of students have participated in the program and the potenial of students participating is not fully known. Of the many Jr's we have had six become officers on out department including five of the six officers today. Others have become career firefighters, police officers, teachers, business leaders, farmers, and many other community leaders. The experience gained through the program is carried with the students for life.
The Jr. Firefighter program is lead by Captain Eric Kolkmeyer. Eric is an 11 year member of the department and started as a Jr. Firefighter. "My goal with the program is to make it fun and allow the students to learn teamwork, responsibility, and accountability through training to become excellent firefighters," says Eric. "I love working with the Jr's because they are so excited to learn that it gets me excited about firefighting all over again."
Our current Jr. Firefighters are Senior Justin Reede, Juniors Michael Strickler, Spencer Ward, Chaz Kronshage, JT Angle, and Sophomore Clayton Wieligman. They have started their new training achedule for the school year. We started off with the basics of firefighting and move into gear and SCBA. By the end of the year they are doing firefighting skills used in structure fires. The second year students are going through the same schedule as the new guys but are building on the skills they already learned. " In the fire service you need repetition to get good. A lot of the skills are muscle memory. The second year students will be leaders when we do small group work," says Eric. " I rely on them to take the new students and show them the ropes."
More to come on the web page later. We will have some pictures of training soon too.
