Wellington-Napoleon
Fire Protection District
The Wellington-Napoleon Fire Protection District offers an all volunteer Basic Life Support (BLS) / part-time Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance. A BLS ambulance crew can be made up of one First Responder Certified crew member and one EMT-B or two EMT-B's. An ALS ambulance can be made up of a First Responder and a EMT-P, an EMT-B and an EMT-P, or two EMT-P's.
EMT-Basic, is the entry level of EMS. The procedures and skills allowed at this level are generally non-invasive such as bleeding control, positive pressure ventilation with a bag valve mask, supplemental oxygen administration, CPR, AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use and splinting (including full spinal immobilization).
EMT-Paramedics, who are commonly referred to as simply "paramedics," represents the highest level of EMT, and in general, the highest level of pre-hospital medical provider, though some areas utilize physicians as providers on air ambulances or as a ground provider. Paramedics perform a variety of medical procedures such as fluid resuscitation, pharmaceutical administration, obtaining IV access, cardiac monitoring (continuous and 12-lead), and other advanced procedures and assessments.
Certified first responder, is a person who has completed forty to sixty hours of training in providing pre-hospital care for medical emergencies. They have more skill than someone who is trained in first aid but they are not emergency medical technicians. The term "certified first responder" is not to be confused with a typical "first responder", which is a literal term to describe the first medically trained responder to arrive on scene (police, fire, EMS, lay rescuer). In some cases, or states, you are considered to be an EMS (Emergency Medical Services) if you have the certification. A "certified first responder" is an actual title given to fill the gap between a basic first aider and an EMT-Basic.
